    borg extract might modify out-of-tree files when extracting maliciously crafted archives

    CVE-2026-62268 · GHSA-gfp8-w835-v44j

    Affected
    • PyPI borgbackup < 1.4.5; >= 2.0.0b1, < 2.0.0b22
    Fixed in
    1.4.52.0.0b22· Vendor fix available
    Issue
    Impact A maliciously crafted archive could contain a symlink (e.g. "evil" - "/etc") followed by an item below it ("evil/passwd"), or an item whose path embeds ".." (e.g. "a/../../etc/passwd"). When extracting such items, borg followed the symlink / resolved the "..", so it could delete or overwrite files outside the extraction directory. In a quite similar scenario, a crafted archive could contain a slave hardlink item with the hardlink source pointing outside the extraction directory. When extracting such an item, borg would hard-link the outside and the inside item. Note: that sounds bad, but it is no big issue in practice: to create such a malicious archive, the attacker would need repository access and (for encrypted or authenticated repos) also the borg key and passphrase. Affected: likely all borg releases before 1.4.5 (and also all borg 2.0.0 betas before b22). Patches - 1.4.x release series: fix released with 1.4.5. commits 3e9ed6d1ad6d3531b39c07b8ef3ecf41fce4437f and…

    Recommended action: Upgrade to 2.0.0b22 (pre-release) or 1.4.5 by release line, then redeploy and verify.A vendor fix does not resolve your finding until you verify it in your own systems.

    Archive spoofing vulnerability in borgbackup

    CVE-2023-36811 · GHSA-8fjr-hghr-4m99

    Affected
    • PyPI borgbackup < 1.2.5
    Fixed in
    1.2.5· Vendor fix available
    Issue
    Impact A flaw in the cryptographic authentication scheme in borgbackup allowed an attacker to fake archives and potentially indirectly cause backup data loss in the repository. The attack requires an attacker to be able to 1. insert files (with no additional headers) into backups 2. gain write access to the repository This vulnerability does not disclose plaintext to the attacker, nor does it affect the authenticity of existing archives. Creating plausible fake archives may be feasible for empty or small archives, but is unlikely for large archives. Affected are all borgbackup releases prior to 1.2.5. Note: CVSS scoring model seemed to badly fit for this case, thus I manually set score to "moderate". Patches The issue has been fixed in borgbackup 1.2.5. But there was a bug in 1.2.5 upgrade instructions, thus 1.2.6 with an important fix in docs and code was released a day afterwards. Additionally to installing the fixed code, users must follow the upgrade procedure as documented in…

    Affected
    • PyPI borgbackup >= 1.1.0b1, < 1.1.3
    Fixed in
    1.1.3· Vendor fix available
