jose4j is vulnerable to DoS via compressed JWE content

    CVE-2024-29371 · GHSA-3677-xxcr-wjqv

    Affected
    • Maven org.bitbucket.b_c:jose4j < 0.9.6
    Fixed in
    0.9.6· Vendor fix available
    Issue
In jose4j before 0.9.6, an attacker can cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS) condition by crafting a malicious JSON Web Encryption (JWE) token with an exceptionally high compression ratio. When this token is processed by the server, it results in significant memory allocation and processing time during decompression.

Recommended action: Upgrade to 0.9.6 or later, then redeploy and verify.A vendor fix does not resolve your finding until you verify it in your own systems.

jose4j denial of service via specifically crafted JWE

    CVE-2023-51775 · GHSA-6qvw-249j-h44c

    Affected
    • Maven org.bitbucket.b_c:jose4j < 0.9.4
    Fixed in
    0.9.4· Vendor fix available
    Issue
The jose4j component before 0.9.4 for Java allows attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a large p2c (aka PBES2 Count) value.

Recommended action: Upgrade to 0.9.4 or later, then redeploy and verify.A vendor fix does not resolve your finding until you verify it in your own systems.

    jose4j uses weak cryptographic algorithm

    CVE-2023-31582 · GHSA-7g24-qg88-p43q

    Affected
    • Maven org.bitbucket.b_c:jose4j < 0.9.3
    Fixed in
    0.9.3· Vendor fix available
    Issue
jose4j before v0.9.3 allows attackers to set a low PBES2 iteration count of 1000 or less.

Recommended action: Upgrade to 0.9.3 or later, then redeploy and verify.A vendor fix does not resolve your finding until you verify it in your own systems.

    Chosen Ciphertext Attack in Jose4j

    GHSA-jgvc-jfgh-rjvv

    Affected
    • Maven org.bitbucket.b_c:jose4j < 0.9.3
    Fixed in
    0.9.3· Vendor fix available
    Issue
RSA15 in jose4j is susceptible to chosen ciphertext attacks. The attack allows to decrypt RSA15 or RSAOAEP encrypted ciphertexts. It may be feasible to sign with affected keys. Severity Moderate - exploiting this ciphertext attack could result in the ability to decrypt RSA15 or RSAOAEP encrypted ciphertexts. Proof of Concept A test case that can reproduce the padding oracle uses the following private key: jose4j has distinguishable behvaior for the following test cases: The first ciphertext below contains an invalid PKCS #1 padding. Because of hte invalid padding a random AES key is generated during decryption. This leads to an authentication error. The second ciphertext below ontains valid PKCS #1 padding, but the size of the encoded key is incorrect. Because of this, trying to dcrypt the symmetric part of the ciphertext immediately fails with org.jose4j.lang.JoseException: Invalid key for AES/GCM/NoPadding. A correct implementation would not have distinguishable behavior. A…
