    Mutable reference with immutable provenance in image

    CVE-2020-35916 · GHSA-9wgh-vjj7-7433

    Affected
    • crates.io image < 0.23.12
    Fixed in
    0.23.12· Vendor fix available
    Issue
    A mutable reference to a struct was constructed by dereferencing a pointer obtained from slice::asptr. Instead, slice::asmutptr should have been called on the mutable slice argument. The former performs an implicit reborrow as an immutable shared reference which does not allow writing through the derived pointer.

    Recommended action: Upgrade to 0.23.12 or later, then redeploy and verify.A vendor fix does not resolve your finding until you verify it in your own systems.

    Use after free in image

    CVE-2019-16138 · GHSA-m2pf-hprp-3vqm

    Affected
    • crates.io image >= 0.10.2, < 0.21.3
    Fixed in
    0.21.3· Vendor fix available
    Issue
    Affected versions of this crate would call Vec::setlen on an uninitialized vector with user-provided type parameter, in an interface of the HDR image format decoder. They would then also call other code that could panic before initializing all instances. This could run Drop implementations on uninitialized types, equivalent to use-after-free, and allow an attacker arbitrary code execution. Two different fixes were applied. It is possible to conserve the interface by ensuring proper initialization before calling Vec::setlen. Drop is no longer called in case of panic, though. Starting from version 0.22, a breaking change to the interface requires callers to pre-allocate the output buffer and pass a mutable slice instead, avoiding all unsafe code.

    Recommended action: Upgrade to 0.21.3 or later, then redeploy and verify.A vendor fix does not resolve your finding until you verify it in your own systems.
