land.oras:oras-java-sdk: Symlink-based path traversal in ArchiveUtils.untar / unzip allows arbitrary file write outside extraction directory
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (land.oras:oras-java-sdk 0.6.4), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary ArchiveUtils.untar(InputStream, Path) and ArchiveUtils.unzip(InputStream, Path) in land.oras:oras-java-sdk create symbolic-link entries from an archive without validating the symlink target. A malicious tar (or zip) shipped as an OCI layer blob can place a symlink under the extraction directory whose target points outside that directory, then ship a regular-file entry whose path traverses through that symlink. The subsequent Files.newOutputStream call follows the symlink and writes the file outside the caller's chosen target directory. This bypasses the existing ensureSafeEntry containment check, which only validates entry.getName() and not entry.getLinkName(). Reachable from the public Registry.pullArtifact / OCILayout.pullArtifact API whenever the manifest layer carries io.deis.oras.content.unpack=true, and from any direct caller of ArchiveUtils.untar / ArchiveUtils.uncompressuntar (e.g. consumers that pull an archive blob and extract it themselves, such as…

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-j6hm-v3x2-qv6j Advisory: land.oras:oras-java-sdk: Symlink-based path traversal in ArchiveUtils.untar / unzip allows arbitrary file write outside extraction directory IDs: GHSA-j6hm-v3x2-qv6j Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-j6hm-v3x2-qv6j (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:54 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: land.oras:oras-java-sdk 0.6.4. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven land.oras:oras-java-sdk: affected <= 0.6.3; fixed in 0.6.4 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven land.oras:oras-java-sdk: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on land.oras:oras-java-sdk. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-j6hm-v3x2-qv6j (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-j6hm-v3x2-qv6j lists affected ranges: Maven land.oras:oras-java-sdk >=0 <=0.6.3) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
