System.Management.Automation subject to bypass via script debugging

CVE-2019-1167GHSA-5frh-8cmj-gc59

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (system.management.automation 6.2.2, 6.1.5), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Microsoft Security Advisory CVE-2019-1167: Windows Defender Application Control Security Feature Bypass Vulnerability Microsoft Security Advisory CVE-2019-1167: Windows Defender Application Control Security Feature Bypass Vulnerability Executive Summary A security feature bypass vulnerability exists in Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) which could allow an attacker to bypass WDAC enforcement. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could circumvent PowerShell Core Constrained Language Mode on the machine. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker would first have access to the local machine where PowerShell is running in Constrained Language mode. By doing that an attacker could leverage script debugging to abuse signed modules in an unintended way. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how PowerShell functions in Constrained Language Mode. System administrators are advised to update PowerShell Core to an unaffected version (see affected…

Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: system.management.automation 6.2.2, 6.1.5. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- NuGet system.management.automation: affected >= 6.2.0, < 6.2.2; >= 6.1.0, < 6.1.5; fixed in 6.1.5, 6.2.2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- NuGet system.management.automation: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on system.management.automation.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
