Various panics, soundness and resource exhaustion issues

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (domain 0.12.3), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Version 0.12.3 fixes a large number of panics, soundness issues, and CPU and memory exhaustion issues in all parts of the crate. The following is a summary of the issues per affected components. For details, please see the release notes.

Base * Limited the number of compression pointers that are followed when parsing a compressed name to 255 to avoid following really long chains. * Limited the length of CNAME chains followed by `Message::canonical_name` to 20. This also fixed an integer overflow in this method when ANCOUNT was`u16::MAX`. * Changed `QuestionSection::answer` to skip over all remaining questions without parsing the QNAMEs to avoid being slowed down by malicious names. * Added length checks when scanning and parsing variable length record data types. This fixes issues with the message builder, which assumes that record data is never too large for placing in a message.

Stub Resolver * Fixed possible panics…

Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: domain 0.12.3. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io domain: affected >= 0.0.0-0, < 0.12.3; fixed in 0.12.3

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io domain: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on domain.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
