Source: amazon-inspector (01fd98b807f4f85a6e016b143dec086ea16de731fb1de0cd84763dbf5d8f6919) The gem declares an extension script (mkrf_conf.rb) that runs automatically during `gem install`. On execution, it collects installer host identifiers (current working directory, home directory, hostname, username) and reads the contents of /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/passwd, and /etc/hosts, serializes them as JSON, and transmits them over a TLS TCPSocket POST to the hardcoded host d8mjdyfukgwrvkth4n83toa0xr3lrgf5.oastify.com. Prior to the HTTP POST, the script performs a DNS resolution of the same oastify.com subdomain, providing a secondary out-of-band beacon via the attacker's DNS logs. oastify.com is PortSwigger Burp Collaborator infrastructure; a hardcoded unique subdomain in a published gem is a dedicated exfiltration channel to the publisher, not a legitimate telemetry sink.

# Patch Next advisory brief: mal-2026-18461 Advisory: Malicious code in shoaib-unity (RubyGems) IDs: mal-2026-18461 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/mal-2026-18461 (revision 1, source checked 3 Nov 2026, 06:10 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - RubyGems shoaib-unity: affected >= 1.0.1, <= 1.0.1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - RubyGems shoaib-unity: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on shoaib-unity. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/MAL-2026-18461 (OSV record MAL-2026-18461 lists affected ranges: RubyGems shoaib-unity >=1.0.1 <=1.0.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
