Malicious code in privacypass-py (PyPI)
What to do
Vendor response not established. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check back for a fix.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source: amazon-inspector (0ca6e88317dac5ec524d2dc6ec4b2af7934e2213569ed7c8a757e59edb45b0c3) The package presents itself as 'Privacy Pass client primitives' but ships no cryptographic functionality. Its only runtime effect is a data-exfiltration beacon. setup.py invokes a `_report()` routine during build/install that collects hostname, username, current working directory, argv, the parent process command line read from /proc/ /cmdline, and environment variable names and values matching credential-related prefixes (AWS_, GITHUB_, PIP_, and others), then POSTs the JSON payload to the hardcoded bare-IP endpoint http://85.190.112.236:8881/b/ over plain HTTP. privacypass_py/init.py repeats the same beacon at module top level, calling `_report('import')` on every `import privacypass_py` with an expanded prefix list (CLOUDFLARE_, SUPERTOKENS, HOME, USER, PATH) and an additional `secretish_names` list filtered by substrings…

# Patch Next advisory brief: mal-2026-18435 Advisory: Malicious code in privacypass-py (PyPI) IDs: mal-2026-18435 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/mal-2026-18435 (revision 1, source checked 2 Nov 2026, 06:00 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI privacypass-py: affected >= 0.1.101, <= 0.1.101; >= 0.1.99, <= 0.1.99; >= 0.1.100, <= 0.1.100 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show privacypass-py`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on privacypass-py. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/MAL-2026-18435 (OSV record MAL-2026-18435 lists affected ranges: PyPI privacypass-py >=0.1.101 =0.1.99 =0.1.100 <=0.1.100) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
