Source: amazon-inspector (433228fbed18f3104fed4cd1bce59bc5a76b8ea061d18c8fc9516c92b6b26e90) package.json declares a postinstall script that runs curl against the ephemeral host http://778e-181-63-25-28.ngrok-free.app over plain HTTP, embedding a shell command-substitution expression in the URL path. The script fires automatically on npm install, confirming installation on the installer's machine and providing a channel to exfiltrate host or environment values via the expanded shell expression. The shipped index.js is an empty stub, so the manifest's postinstall beacon is the package's entire effect. The destination is an anonymous ngrok-free.app tunnel with no relationship to any legitimate publisher, consistent with a dependency-confusion or install-confirmation probe.

# Patch Next advisory brief: mal-2026-18376 Advisory: Malicious code in black-spindle-2 (npm) IDs: mal-2026-18376 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/mal-2026-18376 (revision 1, source checked 30 Oct 2026, 06:00 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - npm black-spindle-2: affected >= 301.0.0, <= 301.0.0; >= 100.0.0, <= 100.0.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `npm ls black-spindle-2 --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on black-spindle-2. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/MAL-2026-18376 (OSV record MAL-2026-18376 lists affected ranges: npm black-spindle-2 >=301.0.0 =100.0.0 <=100.0.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
