Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

react-native-bright-sdk 9000.0.0 is a dependency-confusion package that squats the name of a React Native SDK that is distributed privately as a tarball outside the npm registry. Its `preinstall` script runs `node canary.js`, which collects the machine's hostname and a timestamp, base64-encodes them and sends them in an HTTPS GET request to `https://estimator-nemeses-unwatched.ngrok-free.dev/canary` on install. The package describes itself as a "namespace reservation / canary" and contains no other functionality. The version number 9000.0.0 makes it outrank any private release of the same name in a project whose dependency resolution falls back to the public registry. The request does not read the response or set a timeout, so the install can hang. It was published on 2026-10-22, after an inert `0.0.0-stage` placeholder (not affected). Any machine that installed this version has disclosed its hostname to a third party; remove the package, and check that private package names are…

Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/mal-2026-18290 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:40 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.

Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm react-native-bright-sdk: affected >= 9000.0.0, <= 9000.0.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls react-native-bright-sdk --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on react-native-bright-sdk.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
