Source: amazon-inspector (650ce7eeda9c50d942912db7495f8108fcc3b8447ff9bae79a1bd1b105c1b0d5) src/qowa/init.py contains calls to socket.gethostname() at lines 30, 52, and 247 together with hardcoded Telegram Bot API endpoints (api.telegram.org/bot /...) at lines 117 and 135. The code reads installer host identity and transmits it to an attacker-controlled Telegram bot channel, a known pattern for host-reconnaissance exfiltration using Telegram as a C2/collector. The embedded bot token encodes the destination chat under the operator's control, so installing or importing this package leaks the installer's hostname (and any other collected context) off-host to a third party. The package has no documented purpose that would legitimize Telegram-bot delivery of hostname data.

# Patch Next advisory brief: mal-2026-18218 Advisory: Malicious code in qowa (PyPI) IDs: mal-2026-18218 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/mal-2026-18218 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:45 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI qowa: affected >= 0.1.0, <= 0.1.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show qowa`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on qowa. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/MAL-2026-18218 (OSV record MAL-2026-18218 lists affected ranges: PyPI qowa >=0.1.0 <=0.1.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
