Malicious code in iterquarry (PyPI)
What to do
Vendor response not established. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check back for a fix.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source: amazon-inspector (c408d2ad5c91bc36fcf3fb32c9649828b6c358f6eb0f32d71a18cfdc226c604d) iterquarry 2.1.2 presents itself as an iterator utility library but is structured as a thin facade over a sibling PyPI package 'libseal'. pyproject.toml declares dependencies = ["libseal"] with no version constraint, so whatever version resolves on PyPI at install time is pulled in and its top-level code runs when iterquarry is imported (recipes.py runs 'from libseal import PACKAGE_ROOT, LibsealError, load_sealed_sync, read_module, seal_sync' at module scope, reachable from the package init). The advertised pairwise() API in recipes.py then calls load_sealed_sync(file=SEALED, module_path="quarry", password="pairwise") to decrypt a sealed module shipped inside libseal's install directory using a hardcoded password, and immediately invokes quarry.buffer() in-process. The actual executed code is opaque encrypted content delivered…

# Patch Next advisory brief: mal-2026-18131 Advisory: Malicious code in iterquarry (PyPI) IDs: mal-2026-18131 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/mal-2026-18131 (revision 1, source checked 30 Oct 2026, 06:40 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI iterquarry: affected >= 2.1.1, <= 2.1.1; >= 2.1.2, <= 2.1.2; >= 2.1.3, <= 2.1.3; >= 2.1.4, <= 2.1.4; >= 2.2.0, <= 2.2.0; >= 2.2.1, <= 2.2.1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show iterquarry`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on iterquarry. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/MAL-2026-18131 (OSV record MAL-2026-18131 lists affected ranges: PyPI iterquarry >=2.1.1 =2.1.2 =2.1.3 =2.1.4 =2.2.0 =2.2.1 <=2.2.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
