Source: amazon-inspector (afcd41ab1e378f4c7d767acb2b9e9199a4276e125d6e84aba3627bf37c879f24) facewareretargeter 9.9.9 ships a 2-line stub module and a setup.py whose install_requires declares a single dependency, `tracer-batch-stream-chain`, sourced from a direct https URL (`https://artifacts.vacsdk.com/pypi/tracer_batch_stream_chain-9.9.9.tar.gz`) rather than a PyPI version range. On `pip install facewareretargeter`, pip fetches that tarball from the non-PyPI host and executes its setup.py / build backend on the installer's machine, with no version pin, no hash, and no integrity check. The host is not a known Python index and is unrelated to any declared repository or homepage, so whoever controls `artifacts.vacsdk.com` can deliver arbitrary code to every installer at any time. The package name resembles a plausible internal/private tool and uses an implausibly high version (9.9.9), which is the dependency-confusion shape…

# Patch Next advisory brief: mal-2026-18110 Advisory: Malicious code in facewareretargeter (PyPI) IDs: mal-2026-18110 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/mal-2026-18110 (revision 1, source checked 4 Nov 2026, 06:20 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI facewareretargeter: affected >= 9.9.9, <= 9.9.9 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show facewareretargeter`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on facewareretargeter. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/MAL-2026-18110 (OSV record MAL-2026-18110 lists affected ranges: PyPI facewareretargeter >=9.9.9 <=9.9.9) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
