Before executing its payload it performs sandbox/analysis-evasion checks (CI environment variables, ephemeral/generated hostnames and usernames, known analysis paths, system uptime under 30 minutes, and presence of developer-signal files such as ~/.ssh, ~/.gem/credentials, and ~/.gitconfig). When those checks indicate a real developer workstation, it double-forks a detached, stdio-closed daemon that sleeps a randomized 20-40 minutes and then executes `eval(Base64.decode64(...))` on an embedded payload that opens a /bin/sh reverse shell via TCPSocket to the hardcoded bare IP 45.138.12.177:8089 in a reconnect loop. The create_makefile call is a stub targeting an unrelated name (`bitcoin_rpc_lite_native`), the shipped…

# Patch Next advisory brief: mal-2026-17782 Advisory: Malicious code in crypto-tax-export (RubyGems) IDs: mal-2026-17782 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/mal-2026-17782 (revision 1, source checked 23 Oct 2026, 22:04 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - RubyGems crypto-tax-export: affected >= 0.9.1, <= 0.9.1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - RubyGems crypto-tax-export: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on crypto-tax-export. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/MAL-2026-17782 (OSV record MAL-2026-17782 lists affected ranges: RubyGems crypto-tax-export >=0.9.1 <=0.9.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
