Borrowck Scarifices exposes uninitialized memory in any_as_u8_slice

GHSA-xcpm-76hf-c9cc

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (borrowck_sacrifices 0.2.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

The safe function anyasu8slice can create byte slices that reference uninitialized memory when used with types containing padding bytes. The function uses slice::fromrawparts to create a &[u8] covering the entire size of a type, including padding bytes. According to Rust's documentation, fromrawparts requires all bytes to be properly initialized, but padding bytes in structs are not guaranteed to be initialized. This violates the safety contract and causes undefined behavior.

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-xcpm-76hf-c9cc

Advisory: Borrowck Scarifices exposes uninitialized memory in any_as_u8_slice
IDs: GHSA-xcpm-76hf-c9cc
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-xcpm-76hf-c9cc (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:39 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Low (CVSS 2.0)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: borrowck_sacrifices 0.2.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io borrowck_sacrifices: affected < 0.2.0; fixed in 0.2.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io borrowck_sacrifices: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on borrowck_sacrifices.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
