SurrealDB has uncaught exception in Net module that leads to database crash

GHSA-rq86-9m6r-cm3g

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (surrealdb 2.2.2, 2.1.5, 2.0.5), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

A vulnerability was found where an attacker can crash the database via crafting a HTTP query that returns a null byte. The problem relies on an uncaught exception in the net module, where the result of the query will be converted to JSON before showing as the HTTP response to the user in the /sql endpoint. Impact This vulnerability allows any authenticated user to crash a SurrealDB instance by sending a crafted query with a null byte to the /sql endpoint. Where SurrealDB is used as an application backend, it is possible that an application user can crash the SurrealDB instance and thus the supported application through crafted inputs that exploit this attack vector. Patches A patch has been introduced that ensures the error is caught and converted as an error. - Versions 2.2.2, 2.1.5 and 2.0.5 and later are not affected by this isssue Workarounds Affected users who are unable to update may want to limit the ability of untrusted clients to run arbitrary queries in the affected…

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-rq86-9m6r-cm3g

Advisory: SurrealDB has uncaught exception in Net module that leads to database crash
IDs: GHSA-rq86-9m6r-cm3g
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-rq86-9m6r-cm3g (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.1)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: surrealdb 2.2.2, 2.1.5, 2.0.5. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io surrealdb: affected >= 2.2.0, < 2.2.2; >= 2.1.0, < 2.1.5; < 2.0.5; fixed in 2.1.5, 2.2.2, 2.0.5

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io surrealdb: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on surrealdb.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
