webonyx/graphql-php has unbounded recursion in parser that causes stack overflow on crafted nested input

GHSA-r7cg-qjjm-xhqq

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (webonyx/graphql-php 15.32.3), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary GraphQL\Language\Parser is a recursive descent parser with no recursion depth limit and no zend.maxallowedstacksize interaction. Crafted nested queries trigger a SIGSEGV in the PHP runtime, killing the FPM/CLI worker process. Smallest crashing payload is approximately 74 KB. Affected Component - src/Language/Parser.php -- the Parser class (no recursion depth tracking) - src/Language/Lexer.php -- the Lexer class Severity HIGH (8.2) -- CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H Integrity is Low because the entire PHP process (FPM worker, CLI process, Swoole worker, RoadRunner worker, etc.) is terminated by SIGSEGV. Every concurrent request handled by the same process is dropped along with the attacker's request, with no error message, no log entry, and no recovery path beyond restart. The 74 KB minimum crashing payload sits well below any common HTTP body size limit, and the failure mode is the worst possible: not catchable, not observable, no diagnostics. Description…

Advisory: webonyx/graphql-php has unbounded recursion in parser that causes stack overflow on crafted nested input
IDs: GHSA-r7cg-qjjm-xhqq
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-r7cg-qjjm-xhqq (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:39 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.2)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: webonyx/graphql-php 15.32.3. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Packagist webonyx/graphql-php: affected <= 15.32.2; fixed in 15.32.3

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Packagist webonyx/graphql-php: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on webonyx/graphql-php.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
