aws-cdk-lib's aspect order change causes different Permissions Boundary assigned to Role

GHSA-qc59-cxj2-c2w4

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (aws-cdk-lib 2.189.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary The AWS Cloud Development Kit (AWS CDK) is an open-source software development framework for defining cloud infrastructure in code and provisioning it through AWS CloudFormation. In the CDK, developers organize their applications into reusable components called "constructs," which are organized into a hierarchical tree structure. One of the features of this framework is the ability to call "Aspects," which are mechanisms to set configuration options for all AWS Resources in a particular part of the hierarchy at once. Aspect execution happens in a specific order, and the last Aspect to execute controls the final values in the template. AWS CDK version 2.172.0 introduced a new priority system for Aspects. Prior to this version, CDK would run Aspects based on hierarchical location. The new priority system takes precedence over hierarchical location, altering the invocation order of Aspects. Different priority classes were introduced: Aspects added by CDK APIs were classified as…

Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: aws-cdk-lib 2.189.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm aws-cdk-lib: affected >= 2.172.0, < 2.189.1; fixed in 2.189.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls aws-cdk-lib --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on aws-cdk-lib.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
