Ammonia incorrectly handles embedded SVG and MathML leading to mutation XSS after removal

GHSA-mm7x-qfjj-5g2c

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (ammonia 4.1.2, 4.0.1, 3.3.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Affected versions of this crate did not correctly strip namespace-incompatible tags in certain situations, causing it to incorrectly account for differences between HTML, SVG, and MathML. This vulnerability only has an effect when the svg or math tag is allowed, because it relies on a tag being parsed as html during the cleaning process, but serialized in a way that causes in to be parsed as xml by the browser. Additionally, the application using this library must allow a tag that is parsed as raw text in HTML. These [elements] are: title textarea xmp iframe noembed noframes plaintext noscript style script Applications that do not explicitly allow any of these tags should not be affected, since none are allowed by default. # Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-mm7x-qfjj-5g2c

Advisory: Ammonia incorrectly handles embedded SVG and MathML leading to mutation XSS after removal
IDs: GHSA-mm7x-qfjj-5g2c
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-mm7x-qfjj-5g2c (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:39 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Low (CVSS 1.7)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: ammonia 4.1.2, 4.0.1, 3.3.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io ammonia: affected >= 4.1.0, < 4.1.2; >= 4.0.0, < 4.0.1; < 3.3.1; fixed in 4.1.2, 3.3.1, 4.0.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io ammonia: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on ammonia.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
