Impersonation of other users (passing XBOX Live authentication) by theft of logins in PocketMine-MP

GHSA-h79x-98r2-g6qc

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (pocketmine/pocketmine-mp 4.0.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact Minecraft Bedrock authentication and its protocol encryption are inseparably linked. One is not complete without the other. This vulnerability affects servers which are able to be directly connected to via the internet (i.e. not behind a proxy). If you are using a proxy, please check that it supports protocol encryption and that it is enabled. Technical details <details <summaryclick to expand</summary Basics 1. The client generates a private ECC key clientPriv which it uses to complete ECDH for encryption. 2. A JWT containing the public key clientPub corresponding to this key is signed by Microsoft servers with the Mojang root public key mojangPub. 3. The server verifies that the token was issued by Microsoft servers by verifying the JWT signature with mojangPub. Why this is a problem However, this only ensures that the token was issued by Microsoft. It does not ensure that the client actually possesses the private key corresponding to the public key in the token. In a login…

Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: pocketmine/pocketmine-mp 4.0.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Packagist pocketmine/pocketmine-mp: affected >= 3.0.0, < 4.0.0; fixed in 4.0.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Packagist pocketmine/pocketmine-mp: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on pocketmine/pocketmine-mp.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
