SurrealDB has an Uncaught Exception in Function Generating Random Time
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (surrealdb 2.1.0; surrealdb-core 2.1.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

The rand::time() function in SurrealQL generates a random time from an optional range of two Unix timestamps. Due to the underlying use of timestampopt from the chrono crate, this function could potentially return None in some instances, leading to a panic when unwrap was called on its result in order to return a SurrealQL datetime type to the caller of the function. Impact A client that is authorized to run queries in a SurrealDB server would be able to make repeated (in the order of millions) calls to rand::time() in order to reliably trigger a panic. This would crash the server, leading to denial of service. Patches The function has been updated in to guarantee that some datetime is returned or that an error is otherwise gracefully handled. - Version 2.1.0 and later are not affected by this issue. Workarounds Affected users who are unable to update may want to limit the ability of untrusted clients to run the rand::time() function in the affected versions of SurrealDB using…

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-h4f5-h82v-5w4r Advisory: SurrealDB has an Uncaught Exception in Function Generating Random Time IDs: GHSA-h4f5-h82v-5w4r Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-h4f5-h82v-5w4r (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: surrealdb 2.1.0; surrealdb-core 2.1.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io surrealdb: affected < 2.1.0; fixed in 2.1.0 - crates.io surrealdb-core: affected < 2.1.0; fixed in 2.1.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io surrealdb: check the installed version with your package manager. - crates.io surrealdb-core: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on surrealdb, surrealdb-core. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-h4f5-h82v-5w4r (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-h4f5-h82v-5w4r lists affected ranges: crates.io surrealdb >=0 =0 <2.1.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
