Source description

This crate uses a number of cryptographic algorithms that are no longer considered secure and it uses them in ways that do not guarantee the integrity of the encrypted data. MagicCrypt64 uses the insecure DES block cipher in CBC mode without authentication. This allows for practical brute force and padding oracle attacks and does not protect the integrity of the encrypted data. Key and IV are generated from user input using CRC64, which is not at all a key derivation function. MagicCrypt64, MagicCrypt128, MagicCrypt192, and MagicCrypt256 are all vulnerable to padding-oracle attacks. None of them protect the integrity of the ciphertext. Furthermore, none use password-based key derivation functions, even though the key is intended to be generated from a password. Each of the implementations are unsound in that they use uninitialized memory without MaybeUninit or equivalent structures. For more information, visit the issue.

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-gmx7-gr5q-85w5 Advisory: magic-crypt uses insecure cryptographic algorithms IDs: GHSA-gmx7-gr5q-85w5 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-gmx7-gr5q-85w5 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io magic-crypt: affected <= 4.0.1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io magic-crypt: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on magic-crypt. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-gmx7-gr5q-85w5 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-gmx7-gr5q-85w5 lists affected ranges: crates.io magic-crypt >=0 <=4.0.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
