[actix-files] Panic triggered by empty Range header in GET request for static file
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (actix-files 0.6.10), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary A GET request for a static file served by actix-files with an empty Range header triggers a panic. With panic = "abort", a remote user may crash the process on-demand. Details actix-files assumes that HttpRange::parse(), when Ok, always returns a vector with at least one element. When parse() is called on an empty string, it returns Ok(vec![]). This can cause a panic at named.rs:534 when handling an HTTP request with an empty Range: header. This shouldn't significantly impact programs built with the default panic = "unwind", as the only effect is that the connection is closed when the worker thread panics and new threads are spooled up on demand. Programs built with panic = "abort" are vulnerable to being crashed on-demand by any user with permissions to perform a GET request for a static file served by actix-files. https://github.com/actix/actix-web/blob/0383f4bdd1210e726143ca1ebcf01169b67a4b6c/actix-files/src/named.rs#L530-L535 PoC <details <summaryMinimal…

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-gcqf-3g44-vc9p Advisory: [actix-files] Panic triggered by empty Range header in GET request for static file IDs: GHSA-gcqf-3g44-vc9p Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-gcqf-3g44-vc9p (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:39 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.9) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: actix-files 0.6.10. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io actix-files: affected <= 0.6.9; fixed in 0.6.10 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io actix-files: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on actix-files. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-gcqf-3g44-vc9p (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-gcqf-3g44-vc9p lists affected ranges: crates.io actix-files >=0 <=0.6.9) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
