@tdurieux/anonymous_github Vulnerable to XSS via Unsanitized GitHub Repository Content Rendering in Anonymous GitHub Origin

GHSA-g485-8j3v-p6x8

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (@tdurieux/anonymous_github 2.3.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary Anonymous GitHub fetches repository content (e.g., markdown files) from GitHub's API and renders it without sanitization. On the client side, markdown is parsed with marked (with sanitize: false) and injected into the DOM via $sce.trustAsHtml() + ng-bind-html, bypassing AngularJS's built-in XSS protection. An attacker can craft a malicious GitHub repository whose README executes arbitrary JavaScript in the Anonymous GitHub origin. Details README fetched from GitHub API The server fetches the README via GitHub's REST API and stores the raw markdown in MongoDB: It is then served to the client with no sanitization: Client-side rendering via $sce.trustAsHtml() + ng-bind-html The client fetches the raw README, parses it with renderMD() (which uses marked with sanitize: false), then bypasses AngularJS sanitization: The renderMD() function explicitly disables sanitization: The resulting HTML is bound to the DOM via ng-bind-html, which trusts the string marked by $sce.trustAsHtml()…

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-g485-8j3v-p6x8

Advisory: @tdurieux/anonymous_github Vulnerable to XSS via Unsanitized GitHub Repository Content Rendering in Anonymous GitHub Origin
IDs: GHSA-g485-8j3v-p6x8
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-g485-8j3v-p6x8 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:51 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.1)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: @tdurieux/anonymous_github 2.3.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm @tdurieux/anonymous_github: affected >= 2.2.0, <= 2.2.0; fixed in 2.3.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls @tdurieux/anonymous_github --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on @tdurieux/anonymous_github.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
