Contrast has insecure LUKS2 persistent storage partitions may be opened and used

GHSA-f5p4-p5q5-jv3h

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/edgelesssys/contrast 1.12.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary A malicious host may provide a crafted LUKS2 volume to a Contrast pod VM that uses the secure persistent volume feature. The guest will open the volume and write secret data using a volume key known to the attacker. LUKS2 volume metadata is (a) not authenticated and (b) supports null key-encryption algorithms, allowing an attacker to create a volume such that the volume: - Opens (cryptsetup open) without error using any passphrase or token - Records all writes in plaintext (or ciphertext with an attacker-known key) Details Contrast uses cryptsetup to setup secure persistent volumes, using the secret seed as key for the cryptsetup encryption. To do so the Contrast Initializer will invoke the cryptsetup CLI. If the device provided by Kubernetes is a identified as cryptsetup device, the Initializer assumes a pod restart happened and the device was previously encrypted with the secret seed. The Initializer will try to open the device, and assume it is protected if the operation…

Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/edgelesssys/contrast 1.12.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/edgelesssys/contrast: affected <= 1.12.0; fixed in 1.12.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/edgelesssys/contrast: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/edgelesssys/contrast.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
