use-after-free in tracing
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (tracing 0.1.40), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

The implementation of the [Instrumented::intoinner] method in affected versions of this crate contains undefined behavior due to incorrect use of [std::mem::forget] The function creates const pointers to self, calls [mem::forget(self)][std::mem::forget], and then moves values out of those pointers using [std::ptr::read]. However, the [mem::forget documentation][std::mem::forget] states: Any resources the value manages, such as heap memory or a file handle, will linger forever in an unreachable state. However, it does not guarantee that pointers to this memory will remain valid. This means that these pointers are no longer valid. This could result in a stack use-after-free if LLVM chooses to reuse self's stack slot for a rebinding after the call to [std::mem::forget]. This undefined behavior has not been observed to cause miscompilation as of Rust 1.73.0. However, any use of this method with the affected versions of tracing are unsound. The flaw was corrected in commit [20a1762] (PR…

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-8f24-6m29-wm2r Advisory: use-after-free in tracing IDs: GHSA-8f24-6m29-wm2r Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-8f24-6m29-wm2r (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:37 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Unrated Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: tracing 0.1.40. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io tracing: affected >= 0.1.38, < 0.1.40; fixed in 0.1.40 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io tracing: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on tracing. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-8f24-6m29-wm2r (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-8f24-6m29-wm2r lists affected ranges: crates.io tracing >=0.1.38 <0.1.40) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
