SurrealDB vulnerable to Uncontrolled CPU Consumption via WebSocket Interface

GHSA-58j9-j2fj-v8f4

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (surrealdb 1.1.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

SurrealDB depends on the tungstenite and tokio-tungstenite crates used by the axum crate, which handles connections to the SurrealDB WebSocket interface. On versions before 0.20.1, the tungstenite crate presented an issue which allowed the parsing of HTTP headers during the client handshake to continuously consume high CPU when the headers were very long. All affected crates have been updated in SurrealDB version 1.1.0. From the original advisory for CVE-2023-43669: "The Tungstenite crate through 0.20.0 for Rust allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (minutes of CPU consumption) via an excessive length of an HTTP header in a client handshake. The length affects both how many times a parse is attempted (e.g., thousands of times) and the average amount of data for each parse attempt (e.g., millions of bytes)." Impact A remote unauthenticated attacker may cause a SurrealDB server that exposes its WebSocket interface to consume high CPU by sending an HTTP request with a…

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-58j9-j2fj-v8f4

Advisory: SurrealDB vulnerable to Uncontrolled CPU Consumption via WebSocket Interface
IDs: GHSA-58j9-j2fj-v8f4
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-58j9-j2fj-v8f4 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.5)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: surrealdb 1.1.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io surrealdb: affected < 1.1.0; fixed in 1.1.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io surrealdb: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on surrealdb.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
