ASA-2024-004: Default configuration param for Evidence may limit window of validity Component: CometBFT Criticality: Low Affected versions: All Affected users: Validators, Chain Builders + Maintainers Summary A default configuration in CometBFT has been found to be small for common use cases, and may prevent the slashing mechanism from working in specific cases. The default values for EvidenceParams.MaxAgeNumBlocks and EvidenceParams.MaxAgeDuration consensus parameters may not be sufficient for common use cases to provide coverage for the entire unbonding period for a chain (Staking.UnbondingTime). If the conditions of both of these parameters are exceeded, evidence may be prematurely expired and considered no longer valid, potentially allowing for unpunished Byzantine behavior if evidence is discovered outside of that window. Next Steps for Chains and Validators It is recommended that chain ecosystems and their maintainers set the consensus parameters EvidenceParams.MaxAgeNumBlocks…

Advisory: ASA-2024-004: Default configuration param for Evidence may limit window of validity
IDs: GHSA-555p-m4v6-cqxv
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-555p-m4v6-cqxv (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:18 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Unrated
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/cometbft/cometbft: affected <= 0.38.5

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/cometbft/cometbft: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/cometbft/cometbft.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
