eyre: Parts of Report are dropped as the wrong type during downcast

GHSA-4v52-7q2x-v4xj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (eyre 0.6.12), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

In affected versions, after a Report is constructed using wraperr or wraperrwith to attach a message of type D onto an error of type E, then using downcast to recover ownership of either the value of type D or the value of type E, one of two things can go wrong: - If downcasting to E, there remains a value of type D to be dropped. It is incorrectly "dropped" by running E's drop behavior, rather than D's. For example if D is &str and E is std::io::Error, there would be a call of std::io::Error::drop in which the reference received by the Drop impl does not refer to a valid value of type std::io::Error, but instead to &str. - If downcasting to D, there remains a value of type E to be dropped. When D and E do not happen to be the same size, E's drop behavior is incorrectly executed in the wrong location. The reference received by the Drop impl may point left or right of the real E value that is meant to be getting dropped. In both cases, when the Report contains an error E that has…

# Patch Next advisory brief: GHSA-4v52-7q2x-v4xj

Advisory: eyre: Parts of Report are dropped as the wrong type during downcast
IDs: GHSA-4v52-7q2x-v4xj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/ghsa-4v52-7q2x-v4xj (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.5)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: eyre 0.6.12. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io eyre: affected >= 0.6.9, < 0.6.12; fixed in 0.6.12

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io eyre: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on eyre.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
