Improper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences in HTTP Headers ('HTTP Response Splitting') in Armeria

GHSA-35fr-h7jr-hh86

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (com.linecorp.armeria:armeria 0.97.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Versions of Armeria 0.85.0 through and including 0.96.0 are vulnerable to HTTP response splitting, which allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers via CRLF sequences when unsanitized data is used to populate the headers of an HTTP response. Impact 1. Cross-User Defacement 2. Cache Poisoning 3. Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) 4. Page Hijacking Root Cause The root cause is due to the usage of Netty without the HTTP header validation. https://github.com/line/armeria/blob/f0d870fde1088114070be31b67f7df0a21e835c6/core/src/main/java/com/linecorp/armeria/common/DefaultHttpHeaders.java#L23 Patches This vulnerability has been patched in 0.97.0. Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.5)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: com.linecorp.armeria:armeria 0.97.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven com.linecorp.armeria:armeria: affected >= 0.85.0, < 0.97.0; fixed in 0.97.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven com.linecorp.armeria:armeria: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on com.linecorp.armeria:armeria.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
