vm2: Default VM can mutate host TypedArray and ArrayBuffer intrinsics after the host-prototype pollution fix

CVE-2026-92953GHSA-3vgf-8m4q-q4qr

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (vm2 3.11.8), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Affected packages

  • npm vm2

    Affected
    >= 3.11.0, <= 3.11.7
    Fixed in

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary vm2's current host-intrinsic prototype protection is incomplete. The fix for GHSA-vwrp-x96c-mhwq blocks sandbox writes into classic host intrinsics such as Object.prototype, Array.prototype, and Function.prototype, but current head still lets sandbox code in a default VM reach and mutate host Uint8Array.prototype, %TypedArray%.prototype, and ArrayBuffer.prototype. After VM.run() returns, normal host typed-array and ArrayBuffer objects observe attacker-controlled properties and methods installed by the sandbox. Technical Details The existing mitigation relies on protectedHostObjects in lib/bridge.js. That set is populated from otherGlobalPrototypes, which is built from a fixed inventory of classic globals: The inventory omits typed-array and ArrayBuffer intrinsics. Sandbox code can still reuse the host-prototype walking primitive from the prior public advisory: Those objects are not sandbox-local. Inside the sandbox, hostUint8ArrayPrototype === Uint8Array.prototype,…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-92953

Advisory: vm2: Default VM can mutate host TypedArray and ArrayBuffer intrinsics after the host-prototype pollution fix
IDs: CVE-2026-92953, GHSA-3vgf-8m4q-q4qr
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-92953 (revision 4, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:06 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.3)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: vm2 3.11.8. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm vm2: affected >= 3.11.0, <= 3.11.7; fixed in 3.11.8

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls vm2 --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on vm2.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
