vm2: GHSA-m283-3h24-438v fix bypass leads to host RCE via call/apply indirection
CVE-2026-92937GHSA-647f-g98j-qq25
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (vm2 3.11.7), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary Untrusted JavaScript run by vm2 can escape the sandbox and execute arbitrary commands in the host Node.js process when an embedder-exposed host Promise rejects. This is an incomplete fix for GHSA-m283-3h24-438v: the advisory's capability-bearing rejection rebuild runs only through this direct Promise-handler path, so call/apply indirection bypasses the protection it introduced. The bridge sanitises host rejection values before sandbox callbacks run, but the gate at lib/bridge.js:1624 identity-checks only the direct call target. Registering the rejection handler through Function.prototype.call indirection, p.then.call(p, undefined, cb), makes the intercepted target host Function.prototype.call, so the sanitiser never runs and the raw host error reaches the sandbox (lib/bridge.js:1639) without the rebuild that strips host references carried by its own properties (lib/setup-sandbox.js:2104). A rejection error whose own property references a powerful host object, for example…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-92937 Advisory: vm2: GHSA-m283-3h24-438v fix bypass leads to host RCE via call/apply indirection IDs: CVE-2026-92937, GHSA-647f-g98j-qq25 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-92937 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:06 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Critical (CVSS 10.0) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: vm2 3.11.7. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - npm vm2: affected >= 3.11.6, <= 3.11.6; fixed in 3.11.7 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `npm ls vm2 --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on vm2. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-647f-g98j-qq25 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-647f-g98j-qq25 lists affected ranges: npm vm2 >=3.11.6 <=3.11.6) - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-647f-g98j-qq25 (OSV record GHSA-647f-g98j-qq25 lists affected ranges: npm vm2 >=3.11.6 <3.11.7 (fixed)) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
