vm2 sandbox escape to host RCE via revisited host-wrapped AggregateError bypassing Error sanitization cycle short-circuit
CVE-2026-92934GHSA-x965-fc75-jpqh
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (vm2 3.11.8), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary vm2 3.11.6 (this fork's latest release) contains an incomplete-fix bypass of the Error.cause host-reference sanitization added in GHSA-m283-3h24-438v (commit 7e3faaf). Sandbox code that catches a host-wrapped AggregateError which is revisited within a single handleException traversal (self-cycle, mutual-cycle, or the same host aggregate referenced twice in errors[]) receives a live, unsanitized host proxy inside the "sanitized" errors[], yielding full host RCE on the throw channel that the fix and Defense Invariant #3 explicitly promise to sanitize. Root Cause handleException (lib/setup-sandbox.js) breaks recursion cycles at line 1819 with if (apply(localWeakMapGet, visited, [e])) return e; — returning the RAW host carrier on revisit. For plain-Error carriers this is safe because sanitizeErrorCause/sanitizeHostOwnProps seal the host object in place on first visit. But sanitizeAggregateError (~1954-1972) snapshot-and-rebuilds host-wrapped carriers into a fresh…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-92934 Advisory: vm2 sandbox escape to host RCE via revisited host-wrapped AggregateError bypassing Error sanitization cycle short-circuit IDs: CVE-2026-92934, GHSA-x965-fc75-jpqh Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-92934 (revision 4, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:06 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: vm2 3.11.8. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - npm vm2: affected <= 3.11.7; fixed in 3.11.8 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `npm ls vm2 --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on vm2. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-x965-fc75-jpqh (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-x965-fc75-jpqh lists affected ranges: npm vm2 >=0 <=3.11.7) - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-x965-fc75-jpqh (OSV record GHSA-x965-fc75-jpqh lists affected ranges: npm vm2 >=0 <3.11.8 (fixed)) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
