rclone: RC per-server auth-proxy bypass

CVE-2026-88044GHSA-p569-5gjg-9cmj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/rclone/rclone 1.75.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary serve/start accepts protocol options in a per-server proxyOpt object. The FTP and S3 RC adapters parse that object and pass it to their server constructors, but the constructors decide whether proxy authentication is enabled by checking the process-global proxy.Opt.AuthProxy instead of the supplied proxyOpt.AuthProxy. When the process-global option is empty—the normal case when only the RC request configures the server—the supplied authentication proxy is silently ignored. FTP falls back to its fixed-backend mode, whose defaults accept username anonymous with any password, exposing read, write, and delete operations without the authentication the operator configured. S3 falls back to the fixed filesystem: with an authkey, any holder of that key reaches the fixed RC fs instead of the backend selected by the auth proxy. The S3 no-authkey mode is explicitly documented as anonymous and is not part of this vulnerability claim. The confirmed S3 impact is proxy-based…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-88044

Advisory: rclone: RC per-server auth-proxy bypass
IDs: CVE-2026-88044, GHSA-p569-5gjg-9cmj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-88044 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:29 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.1)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/rclone/rclone 1.75.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/rclone/rclone: affected >= 1.70.0, < 1.75.1; fixed in 1.75.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/rclone/rclone: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/rclone/rclone.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
