GitPython: Repository content can impersonate the git directory, leading to arbitrary code execution
CVE-2026-87817GHSA-239g-whfq-7xj9
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (gitpython 3.1.60), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary Repo.init decides which directory is the git directory by testing candidate paths in an order that considers the real .git last. Two earlier tests can be satisfied by ordinary tracked files. Git reserves only the literal name .git, so HEAD, objects/, refs/, config, gitdir, commondir and hooks/ at a repository root are all legal tracked content. Consequently, after a victim opens or clones an attacker's repository, GitPython resolves gitdir to the working-tree root while real git correctly resolves <root/.git. Everything GitPython then treats as "inside the git directory" is attacker-authored content — including hooks/, which it executes. CVE-2026-87817 Affected code (3.1.59) The discovery loop in git/repo/base.py tests, in order: 1. git/repo/base.py:299 — isfile(curpath/gitdir) and isfile(curpath/commondir) and isfile(curpath/HEAD) 2. git/repo/base.py:320 — isgitdir(curpath) 3. git/repo/base.py:341 — dotgit = osp.join(curpath, ".git") ← the real git dir, considered last…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-87817 Advisory: GitPython: Repository content can impersonate the git directory, leading to arbitrary code execution IDs: CVE-2026-87817, GHSA-239g-whfq-7xj9 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-87817 (revision 4, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:54 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: gitpython 3.1.60. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI gitpython: affected <= 3.1.59; fixed in 3.1.60 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show gitpython`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on gitpython. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-239g-whfq-7xj9 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-239g-whfq-7xj9 lists affected ranges: PyPI gitpython >=0 <=3.1.59) - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-239g-whfq-7xj9 (OSV record GHSA-239g-whfq-7xj9 lists affected ranges: PyPI gitpython >=0 <3.1.60 (fixed)) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
