gRPC-Go xDS servers: Denial of Service (DoS) via crash due to missing :authority and Host headers

CVE-2026-84445GHSA-2v4p-qf9q-27wj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (google.golang.org/grpc 1.85.0-dev.0.20260825072537-93e31b48545e, 1.84.0-dev.0.20260825144003-d5a41119e0e3, 1.83.2, 1.82.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

A vulnerability exists in gRPC-Go servers configured with xds.NewGRPCServer() where a crafted request missing both :authority and Host headers can cause a server panic, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS). Servers built with xds.NewGRPCServer install an xDS routing interceptor on every RPC. This interceptor looks up the request’s :authority header to pick a virtual host. The HTTP/2 server transport previously accepted requests that had neither :authority nor Host. When this happened, the xDS routing interceptor attempted to access the first element of an empty slice of authorities, leading to an index out of bounds panic. Since the per-RPC goroutine does not recover from panics, the entire server process would terminate. This panic occurs in the interceptor pipeline, meaning the transport credentials handshake (TLS, mTLS, or ALTS) and HTTP/2 connection establishment must complete successfully before the crafted request can reach this logic. - Insecure/Standard TLS: If the server…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-84445

Advisory: gRPC-Go xDS servers: Denial of Service (DoS) via crash due to missing `:authority` and `Host` headers
IDs: CVE-2026-84445, GHSA-2v4p-qf9q-27wj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-84445 (revision 4, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:29 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.7)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: google.golang.org/grpc 1.85.0-dev.0.20260825072537-93e31b48545e, 1.84.0-dev.0.20260825144003-d5a41119e0e3, 1.83.2, 1.82.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go google.golang.org/grpc: affected < 1.82.2; >= 1.83.0, < 1.83.2; >= 1.84.0-dev, < 1.84.0-dev.0.20260825144003-d5a41119e0e3; >= 1.85.0-dev, < 1.85.0-dev.0.20260825072537-93e31b48545e; fixed in 1.84.0-dev.0.20260825144003-d5a41119e0e3, 1.83.2, 1.82.2, 1.85.0-dev.0.20260825072537-93e31b48545e

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go google.golang.org/grpc: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on google.golang.org/grpc.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
