rclone: S3 backend does not strip X-Amz-Security-Token on a same-host HTTPS->HTTP redirect

CVE-2026-79782GHSA-gx4c-2hqx-cw2r

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/rclone/rclone 1.74.4), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Vulnerability Details File: backend/s3/s3.go Lines: 1359-1380 (functions s3CheckRedirect / s3RedirectCrossesHost) Root Cause Commit e7b1eb774 (released in v1.74.3) added a CheckRedirect policy for the S3 HTTP client whose purpose is to strip the X-Amz-Security-Token header (the AWS STS session token) whenever a redirect chain "crosses a host", so the token isn't forwarded to an unintended origin. s3RedirectCrossesHost decides this purely by comparing url.URL.Host (hostname[:port]); it never looks at url.URL.Scheme. A redirect that keeps the exact same host:port but changes the scheme from https:// to http:// therefore compares as "same host" and X-Amz-Security-Token is not stripped — it is sent again, this time over plaintext HTTP. Attack Scenario 1. The user configures an s3 remote (or --s3-endpoint pointing at a self-hosted/third-party S3-compatible service) using temporary credentials that include an STS sessiontoken (common for assumed-role / CI / Kubernetes IRSA setups). 2. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-79782

Advisory: rclone: S3 backend does not strip X-Amz-Security-Token on a same-host HTTPS->HTTP redirect
IDs: CVE-2026-79782, GHSA-gx4c-2hqx-cw2r
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-79782 (revision 4, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:28 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.3)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/rclone/rclone 1.74.4. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/rclone/rclone: affected <= 1.74.3; fixed in 1.74.4

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/rclone/rclone: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/rclone/rclone.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
