Velocity.js: Remote Code Execution via property-read to Function constructor (bypass of GHSA-j658-c2gf-x6pq fix)
CVE-2026-73649GHSA-7gfh-x38p-prh3
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (velocityjs 2.1.7), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary Remote Code Execution (RCE) in velocityjs v2.1.6 via property-read to the Function constructor. This bypasses the fix for GHSA-j658-c2gf-x6pq ("Prototype Pollution in #set path assignment") — that advisory blocked constructor/proto/prototype only in the #set assignment handler (set.cjs), but property read expressions are unfiltered. Any application rendering attacker-controlled Velocity templates is vulnerable to arbitrary code execution on the server. Details GHSA-j658-c2gf-x6pq added isBlockedPathKey() to dist/cjs/compile/set.cjs:35-43, which blocks proto, constructor, and prototype keys. However, this check only runs when the #set directive assigns a value — it validates the assignment target path, not the value expression being evaluated. The value expression is evaluated via getReferences() in dist/cjs/compile/references.cjs:16, which calls getAttributes() at line 81. The property access at line 88-89 has no filtering: // references.cjs:81-91 getAttributes(property,…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-73649 Advisory: Velocity.js: Remote Code Execution via property-read to Function constructor (bypass of GHSA-j658-c2gf-x6pq fix) IDs: CVE-2026-73649, GHSA-7gfh-x38p-prh3 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-73649 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:01 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.8) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: velocityjs 2.1.7. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - npm velocityjs: affected <= 2.1.6; fixed in 2.1.7 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `npm ls velocityjs --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on velocityjs. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-7gfh-x38p-prh3 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-7gfh-x38p-prh3 lists affected ranges: npm velocityjs >=0 <=2.1.6) - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-7gfh-x38p-prh3 (OSV record GHSA-7gfh-x38p-prh3 lists affected ranges: npm velocityjs >=0 <2.1.7 (fixed)) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
