Craft CMS: Authorization bypass: view-only Categories user can modify category structure via structures/move-element

CVE-2026-72785GHSA-xxpx-f366-4xpq

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (craftcms/cms 5.10.6), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

A control-panel user who holds only the viewCategories permission for a category group (and not saveCategories) can permanently modify that group's category structure — reordering and re-parenting categories via the structures/move-element action. A read-time authorization grant that a write endpoint later trusts. For categories, the structureEditable flag is computed from the view permission (src/elements/Category.php:205) instead of the save permission (entries correctly use saveEntries — src/elements/Entry.php:341). When the read-only category index renders, craft\base\Element::indexHtml() calls Craft::$app-getSession()-authorize('editStructure:<structureId'); StructuresController then authorizes the structure-mutating action solely on that session grant, with no canSave re-check. Verified on Craft CMS 5.10.5. Same class as the moderate-severity authorization bypasses fixed in 5.10.3 and 5.10.5; this is a distinct, unpatched instance. Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.3)

Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: craftcms/cms 5.10.6. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Packagist craftcms/cms: affected >= 5.0.0-RC1, < 5.10.6; fixed in 5.10.6

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Packagist craftcms/cms: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on craftcms/cms.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
