Craft CMS: Incorrect path validation could potentially lead to path traversal
CVE-2026-72783GHSA-7hxc-f267-h5q7
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (craftcms/cms 5.10.6, 4.18.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

The ensurePathIsContained function of the Local file system class is theoretically vulnerable to path traversal, although no exploitable scenario has been discovered. When a file is read, an Asset object uses the getFileStream method of the Volume where the asset file is stored, which in turn uses the getFileStream method of the file system class used by that Volume. For the Local file system, this function returns a stream to a file on the local disk after verifying and creating the correct file path. The file path is constructed by first validating the path and then adding a prefix to the validated and normalized path. The prefix is the path to the local directory that houses the particular volume. The order of operations matters here: first, a validation step, afterward a normalization step, and finally the construction of the resulting file path. This opens the possibility of a desanitization-style vulnerability, where the normalization invalidates the assumptions made by the…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-72783 Advisory: Craft CMS: Incorrect path validation could potentially lead to path traversal IDs: CVE-2026-72783, GHSA-7hxc-f267-h5q7 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-72783 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:51 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Low (CVSS 2.1) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: craftcms/cms 5.10.6, 4.18.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Packagist craftcms/cms: affected >= 5.0.0-RC1, < 5.10.6; >= 4.0.0-RC1, < 4.18.2; fixed in 4.18.2, 5.10.6 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Packagist craftcms/cms: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on craftcms/cms. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-7hxc-f267-h5q7 (OSV record GHSA-7hxc-f267-h5q7 lists affected ranges: Packagist craftcms/cms >=5.0.0-RC1 =4.0.0-RC1 <4.18.2 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-7hxc-f267-h5q7 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-7hxc-f267-h5q7 lists affected ranges: Packagist craftcms/cms >=5.0.0-RC1 =4.0.0-RC1 <4.18.2) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
