Craft CMS: Passkey login accepts replayed WebAuthn assertions
CVE-2026-72780GHSA-wg23-69c2-gjc8
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (craftcms/cms 5.10.5), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Craft CMS passkey login accepts WebAuthn requestOptions from the unauthenticated login request body and does not persist the updated credential counter returned by the WebAuthn assertion validator. A captured passkey login request body can therefore be replayed because the old challenge is accepted again, and the stored credential counter remains stale. Craft CMS 5.10.3 and current 5.x HEAD accept PublicKeyCredentialRequestOptions from the unauthenticated users/login-with-passkey request body and do not persist the updated PublicKeyCredentialSource returned/mutated by web-auth/webauthn-lib after assertion validation. As a result, a captured passkey login request body is not one-time-use. Reposting the same requestOptions and response can result in validation against the same stale credential counter and create another Craft session for that user. This weakens passkeys from a fresh, server-challenged authentication ceremony into a replayable bearer artifact if one successful assertion…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-72780 Advisory: Craft CMS: Passkey login accepts replayed WebAuthn assertions IDs: CVE-2026-72780, GHSA-wg23-69c2-gjc8 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-72780 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:50 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.1) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: craftcms/cms 5.10.5. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Packagist craftcms/cms: affected >= 5.0.0-RC1, < 5.10.5; fixed in 5.10.5 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Packagist craftcms/cms: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on craftcms/cms. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-wg23-69c2-gjc8 (OSV record GHSA-wg23-69c2-gjc8 lists affected ranges: Packagist craftcms/cms >=5.0.0-RC1 <5.10.5 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-wg23-69c2-gjc8 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-wg23-69c2-gjc8 lists affected ranges: Packagist craftcms/cms >=5.0.0-RC1 <5.10.5) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
