Open WebUI: Any member with write access to a standard channel can edit or delete other members' messages

CVE-2026-70481GHSA-mj5r-jf49-m3w7

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (open-webui 0.11.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Affected packages

  • PyPI open-webui

    Affected
    >= 0.5.0, <= 0.10.2
    Fixed in
    0.11.0

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary On standard channels, the message update and delete handlers accepted any caller holding write access on the channel, without checking that the caller wrote the message. Write access is the same grant a member needs in order to post, so every ordinary participant in a shared channel could rewrite or permanently delete any other participant's messages. The group and direct message branch of the same handlers enforced authorship; the standard branch did not. Preconditions Channels are disabled by default and must be enabled by an administrator (ENABLECHANNELS). The channel must be a standard channel; group and direct message channels are not affected. The attacker is any authenticated account with role user that holds write access on the channel, whether granted publicly, per user, or through a group. No ownership of the channel, channel manager role, or elevated role is required. Channel and message ids are returned by the listing endpoints the member can already call. Impact…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-70481

Advisory: Open WebUI: Any member with write access to a standard channel can edit or delete other members' messages
IDs: CVE-2026-70481, GHSA-mj5r-jf49-m3w7
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-70481 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:50 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.4)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: open-webui 0.11.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- PyPI open-webui: affected >= 0.5.0, <= 0.10.2; fixed in 0.11.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show open-webui`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on open-webui.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-mj5r-jf49-m3w7 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-mj5r-jf49-m3w7 lists affected ranges: PyPI open-webui >=0.5.0 <=0.10.2)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
