GitPython: Newline injection in config_writer() section parameter bypasses CVE-2026-42215 patch, enabling RCE via core.hooksPath
CVE-2026-67326GHSA-mv93-w799-cj2w
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (gitpython 3.1.50), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary The patch for CVE-2026-42215 (GitPython 3.1.49) validates newlines only in the value parameter of setvalue(). The section and option parameters are passed to configparser without any newline validation. An attacker who controls the section argument can inject \n to write arbitrary section headers into .git/config, including a forged [core] section with hooksPath pointing to an attacker-controlled directory, leading to RCE when any git hook is triggered. Details File: git/config.py — GitPython 3.1.49 (latest patched version) write() formats section headers as "[%s]\n" % name. When section = "user]\n[core", this writes [user]\n[core]\n — two valid section headers — into .git/config. PoC Impact Same attack outcome as CVE-2026-42215 (RCE via core.hooksPath injection). The patch is incomplete — only value is validated while section and option remain injectable.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-67326 Advisory: GitPython: Newline injection in config_writer() section parameter bypasses CVE-2026-42215 patch, enabling RCE via core.hooksPath IDs: CVE-2026-67326, GHSA-mv93-w799-cj2w Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-67326 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:41 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.0) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: gitpython 3.1.50. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI gitpython: affected <= 3.1.49; fixed in 3.1.50 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show gitpython`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on gitpython. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-mv93-w799-cj2w (OSV record GHSA-mv93-w799-cj2w lists affected ranges: PyPI gitpython >=0 <3.1.50 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-mv93-w799-cj2w (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-mv93-w799-cj2w lists affected ranges: PyPI gitpython >=0 <=3.1.49) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
