Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
A vulnerability in jupyter-server versions 1.12.0 through 2.17.0 allows an attacker to bypass CORS origin validation when the `allow_origin_pat` configuration is used. The issue arises from the use of `re.match()` for validating the `Origin` header, which only anchors at the start of the string. This allows attacker-controlled domains such as `trusted.example.com.evil.com` to pass validation against patterns intended to match `trusted.example.com`. The vulnerability affects multiple locations in the codebase, including CORS headers, WebSocket connections, referer validation, and login redirects, potentially enabling phishing attacks, arbitrary code execution, and unauthorized access to sensitive API responses.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-6657 Advisory: jupyter-server is vulnerable to CORS origin validation bypass when the `allow_origin_pat` configuration is used IDs: CVE-2026-6657, GHSA-v42x-x7jp-845h Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-6657 (revision 1, source checked 24 Oct 2026, 04:13 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.1) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI jupyter-server: affected >= 1.12.0, <= 2.17.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show jupyter-server`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on jupyter-server. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/PYSEC-2026-3472 (OSV record PYSEC-2026-3472 lists affected ranges: PyPI jupyter-server >=1.12.0 <=2.17.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
