sqlparse: Inefficient Regex Handling of Dollar-Quoted SQL Literals Leads to ReDoS (Denial of Service)
CVE-2026-59893GHSA-prg7-hcfm-mfcr
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (sqlparse 0.6.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary sqlparse contains a Regular Expression Denial of Service (ReDoS) vulnerability in its dollar-quoted SQL literal lexer. The regex pattern at sqlparse/keywords.py:33 uses a backreference (\1) to match closing dollar-quote delimiters, causing O(n²) CPU complexity when processing inputs containing many unique, unmatched dollar-quote opening sequences. An attacker who can supply arbitrary SQL text to any application using sqlparse can trigger sustained CPU exhaustion, resulting in a denial of service. No authentication or special privileges are required. Scope note: the same regex shape — a lazy dot-all quantifier terminated by a delimiter, applied at every input position by the lexer loop — is also present in the two multiline-comment patterns. Those are covered by this advisory and by the same fix; see "Additional affected pattern: multiline comments" below. Details The vulnerable regex is defined in sqlparse/keywords.py as part of SQLREGEX: This pattern first captures a…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-59893 Advisory: sqlparse: Inefficient Regex Handling of Dollar-Quoted SQL Literals Leads to ReDoS (Denial of Service) IDs: CVE-2026-59893, GHSA-prg7-hcfm-mfcr Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-59893 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:50 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: sqlparse 0.6.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI sqlparse: affected <= 0.5.6.dev0; fixed in 0.6.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show sqlparse`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on sqlparse. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-prg7-hcfm-mfcr (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-prg7-hcfm-mfcr lists affected ranges: PyPI sqlparse >=0 <=0.5.6.dev0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
