Gitea: Improper authorization on OAuth sign-in callback silently re-enables administrator-disabled accounts

CVE-2026-58422GHSA-g9g6-qhrc-p3qc

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (code.gitea.io/gitea 1.26.4), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary The OAuth2 sign-in callback in Gitea 1.26.1 unconditionally re-enables a locally-disabled account whenever the user authenticates through a linked external identity provider, silently undoing any administrator-initiated Disable Account action and issuing a fresh authenticated session in the same response. Once a user has linked any external IdP, the administrator's disable toggle becomes non-binding — the user can re-enable themselves on demand by completing one OAuth callback, regaining full read and write access to their repositories, organizations, and access tokens. Details Improper Authorization is present on the code and state parameters of the /user/oauth2/{source-name}/callback endpoint in Gitea version 1.26.1. The handler routers/web/auth/oauth.go::handleOAuth2SignIn reads the local user's IsActive flag at lines 350-352 and, when it is false, sets opts.IsActive = optional. Some(true) before calling userservice.UpdateUser and immediately establishing a session. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-58422

Advisory: Gitea: Improper authorization on OAuth sign-in callback silently re-enables administrator-disabled accounts
IDs: CVE-2026-58422, GHSA-g9g6-qhrc-p3qc
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-58422 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:27 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.6)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: code.gitea.io/gitea 1.26.4. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go code.gitea.io/gitea: affected < 1.26.4; fixed in 1.26.4

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go code.gitea.io/gitea: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on code.gitea.io/gitea.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-g9g6-qhrc-p3qc (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-g9g6-qhrc-p3qc lists affected ranges: Go code.gitea.io/gitea >=0 <1.26.4)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
