MCPVault: PathFilter restricted directories (.git/.obsidian/node_modules) only denied at vault root, not nested

CVE-2026-57442GHSA-9c83-rr99-vfwj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (@bitbonsai/mcpvault 0.11.5), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

PathFilter's deny-list glob patterns are anchored, so .git, .obsidian, and nodemodules were only blocked at the vault root. Nested copies inside the vault (e.g. tools/cli/nodemodules/..., tools/somerepo/.git/config, a nested .obsidian/) were fully traversable via isAllowed/isAllowedForListing. Impact: a nested .git/config (remote URLs / embedded tokens) and nested .obsidian contents could be read, under the same prompt-injection threat model as GHSA-j99q-93c9-h869 (an attacker influences the path an agent reads). It also caused nested nodemodules to pollute the tag index (#128, the public symptom). Fixed in 0.11.5 by denying these restricted names at any path depth (matched case-insensitively as any path segment).

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-57442

Advisory: MCPVault: PathFilter restricted directories (.git/.obsidian/node_modules) only denied at vault root, not nested
IDs: CVE-2026-57442, GHSA-9c83-rr99-vfwj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-57442 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:57 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.9)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: @bitbonsai/mcpvault 0.11.5. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm @bitbonsai/mcpvault: affected < 0.11.5; fixed in 0.11.5

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls @bitbonsai/mcpvault --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on @bitbonsai/mcpvault.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
