Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary Missing authorization checks exist for instance copying where an attacker knowing the name of a project that they don't have access to and the name of an instance in that project can copy the instance to a new project. This issue could allow an attacker to access secrets in instances they are not authorized to access. Details cmd/incusd/instances.go authorizes POST /1.0/instances against the target project. In the copy path, cmd/incusd/instancespost.go then loads the source instance from req.Source.Project without checking whether the caller can view that source instance. The copy must occur on the same server. However, once the copy has been done, nothing prevents a malicious actor from moving the instance to another server. PoC Setup Assumes the target server is remotely accessible and a user/certificate has been added. Exploitation The below script was partly generated. To copy the secret instance to the default project, the following command can be used. Wait a bit for…

Vendor response: Partial vendor fix; fixed versions by package: github.com/lxc/incus/v7/cmd/incusd 7.2.0; github.com/lxc/incus/v7 7.2.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/lxc/incus/v7/cmd/incusd: affected < 7.2.0; fixed in 7.2.0
- Go github.com/lxc/incus/v6: affected every version
- Go github.com/lxc/incus/v7: affected < 7.2.0; fixed in 7.2.0
- Go github.com/lxc/incus: affected every version

## Suggested inspection (read-only)

## Supported action
No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/lxc/incus/v7/cmd/incusd, github.com/lxc/incus/v6, github.com/lxc/incus/v7, github.com/lxc/incus.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
