Buffa has a Use-After-Free in OwnedView via Unsound 'static Lifetime Promotion in Deref

CVE-2026-55406GHSA-9pwq-gcrx-wghh

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (buffa 0.7.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

A soundness bug in buffa's OwnedView<V allowed safe Rust code to trigger a use-after-free. The OwnedView::decode constructor transmuted a borrowed slice to &'static [u8], and the Deref implementation exposed the promoted 'static lifetime on borrowed view fields (such as &'static str and &'static [u8]) to callers. Because these references appeared to be 'static, the borrow checker permitted them to outlive the OwnedView; once the OwnedView was dropped and its backing buffer freed, those references became dangling, enabling memory corruption, information disclosure of freed heap contents, and cross-thread misuse — all without any unsafe code in the calling application. Users are advised to update to the latest patched version of buffa. Thank you to hackerone.com/suul for reporting this issue.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-55406

Advisory: Buffa has a Use-After-Free in OwnedView via Unsound 'static Lifetime Promotion in Deref
IDs: CVE-2026-55406, GHSA-9pwq-gcrx-wghh
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-55406 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:43 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.9)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: buffa 0.7.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io buffa: affected < 0.7.0; fixed in 0.7.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io buffa: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on buffa.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
