electron-updater: Cross-origin redirect leaks PRIVATE-TOKEN and mixed-case Authorization credentials in builder-util-runtime

CVE-2026-54673GHSA-p2f4-r6v6-j797

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (builder-util-runtime 9.7.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary In electron-builder's builder-util-runtime package, the HTTP redirect handler (HttpExecutor.prepareRedirectUrlOptions) only stripped a credential header whose key string matched exactly lowercase "authorization". Other credential-bearing headers — most notably PRIVATE-TOKEN (used by GitLab's personal access token flow) and mixed-case Authorization (used by GitLab's Bearer/OAuth flow) — were not stripped and could be forwarded to an attacker-controlled cross-origin redirect destination. --- Details Root cause HttpExecutor.prepareRedirectUrlOptions (introduced in builder-util-runtime via PR #9211, first released in v26.0.20) performed its cross-origin credential strip with a single case-sensitive property check: JavaScript object property access is case-sensitive. The guard headers?.authorization evaluates to undefined (falsy) when the key is "Authorization", "AUTHORIZATION", or any other casing, so the branch is never entered and no header is deleted for those cases. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2026-54673

Advisory: electron-updater: Cross-origin redirect leaks `PRIVATE-TOKEN` and mixed-case `Authorization` credentials in `builder-util-runtime`
IDs: CVE-2026-54673, GHSA-p2f4-r6v6-j797
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2026-54673 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:58 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.2)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: builder-util-runtime 9.7.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm builder-util-runtime: affected < 9.7.0; fixed in 9.7.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls builder-util-runtime --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on builder-util-runtime.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
